ABSTRACT

On January 26, 1793, Otto van Eck, twelve years old at the time, was shocked to discover that his watch was no longer in his pocket. “Straightaway I looked in all the places where it could and should have been, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Now I'm afraid, it will only be found after a long time, but I won't give up all hope and at first light tomorrow I will have another good look to see if I can find it. Papa has been kind enough to say nothing about it, but now that I have lost my watch, Oh!. …” (see Figure 13.1).
