ABSTRACT

Knowledge management (KM) is a topic that has captured the attention of senior management in the commercial world over the past five years. Numerous books, journals, articles, conferences and web sites have been produced discussing the concepts that make up KM, highlighting the fact that managing knowledge is a vital activity in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy. In a recent survey produced by KPMG Consulting (2000), KM was recognised as an essential business tool with some 79 per cent of respondents regarding it as playing an ‘extremely’ or ‘very significant’ role in improving competitive advantage.
