ABSTRACT
The TRC in South Africa was set up in order to address the issue of human rights violations that had been perpetrated during the years of apartheid rule. It was a compromise between the former apartheid government's push for a blanket amnesty for its members and agents on the one hand, and the pressure for Nurembergtype trials advocated by some among the ranks of the liberation movements on the other.
