ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces an approach to the process of analyzing electroacoustic music through the use of interactive software developed by the author 2 (DVD reference 1) using Max/MSP (www.cycling74.com). This interactive software aids readers’ exploration of the composition by allowing them to recall specific locations in the work—which can be retrieved from compact disc as they are discussed—and to juxtapose different passages from the work. Interactive examples of processing and synthesizing sounds are included to enhance understanding of the compositional process. The interactive aural analysis presents listeners with opportunities for continuing exploration of the composition. The software can be used in conjunction with any of the commercial CD recordings of Jonathan Harvey’s Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco. 3
