ABSTRACT

The individual needs of pupils are addressed when all pupils achieve their learning potential, and this chapter is about ways in which this can be brought about. In most cases the individual needs of pupils in all of the above categories can be met by careful planning and the differentiation of learning opportunities. Differentiation for individual needs might involve planning materials for the different abilities in your class. It might also involve planning for the use of specially adapted equipment as in the case of physical disability. Addressing individual needs is about inclusion, and this is achieved by providing all pupils with an entitlement to music education by making musical achievement accessible. Schools have a statutory requirement to address the individual needs of their pupils in relation to music, and there is no reason why they should not do this, despite the traditional frustrations of space and resources.
