ABSTRACT
The indictment is the formal document setting out the charges which the defendant faces at the Crown Court. Each offence is known as a ‘count’. An indictment is only valid when it is signed by an appropriate officer of the Crown Court. A draft indictment which has not yet been signed by an officer of the Crown Court is known as a ‘bill of indictment’.
