E.Pauline Johnson [Tekahionwake or “Double Wampum”] (March 10, 1861–March 17, 1913)

Renowned in Canada, Great Britain, and the United States for her powerful oral interpretations of her own work, Johnson was one of the first Indian women to publish books of poetry and short stories. She is also among the earliest Indian writers to deal with the theme of the mixed-blood. Johnson also achieved acclaim as a reinterpreter of legends of the Northwest Coast Indians.
