ABSTRACT

The patient complains of always having a cold. The nose is obstructed, there is discharge which is usually clear and watery and sometimes copious, and there are bouts of sneezing. The symptoms may be seasonal or perennial. On examining the nose, congestion of the nasal mucous membrane is usually seen, and in allergic cases there may be a curious, characteristic, violet colouration, particularly of the mucous membrane over the inferior turbinates. Excessive secretion within the nose may be obvious. In uncomplicated cases, evidence of infection within the nose is lacking.
