ABSTRACT
Congenital heart disease has an incidence of eight per 1,000 births, and usually will present with a cardiac murmur at or soon after birth. The murmur may appear in the first weeks of life, and so if initial examination is normal and a murmur is later detected, this does not necessarily imply incompetence in the earlier examination.
