ABSTRACT
Check that immunisations are up to date (and discuss if not). Give any overdue immunisation. Physical examination with especial attention to the heart sounds, the hips and genitalia (especially testicular descent). Vision both acuity (fine vision with hundreds and thousands), ocular movements following a ball and cover test to exclude squint. Hearing via a distraction test with voice, Manchester rattle and cup and observation of ‘speech’ and babble. Manipulation bricks, paper ball, string/ball. Posture and movement standing, sitting, prone, supine, rolling, crawling/creeping. Reflexes including downward and forward parachute. Social and play shyness, interactions. Measure/record height, weight and head circumference.
