ABSTRACT
The nurse should always act as the patient’s advocate. The nurse is not merely a delegatee of the doctor but he/she owes the patient an individual duty of care. If the nurse knows that the doctor is going to make a mistake which will harm the patient, the nurse has to act in the best interest of the patient
A ‘Scope of Professional Practice’ framework should be developed within each healthcare organisation to ensure that the expansions of professional roles are based upon skills, education and competencies to reduce unnecessary risk exposure.
