ABSTRACT
Outside of California, community colleges have similar goals. The nation’s community colleges are a point of access into higher education for those students who most often do not fit the traditional college student profile (Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, 1999; Justice & Dornan, 2001). Students at community colleges often describe themselves through their other responsibilities first and as a student last. Most have familial and work obligations that take precedence, leaving them with limited time to devote to study and classes. Most are part-time students (California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, 2003) who may not have qualified for less accessible higher education institutions.
