ABSTRACT

Civilian witnesses claim expenses for their attendance at court and an IO is under a duty to liaise with each and every witness to ascertain what expenses they have incurred, that is, loss of earnings, fares etc. There are court guidelines for amounts payable in relation to witness expenses. IOs should pass a note to the council’s advocate before the end of the prosecution case advising him of the amount of witness expenses claimed. The advocate will then be in a position to amend any application for costs.
