ABSTRACT

This bibliography of secondary materials includes other bibliographies, biographical materials, reviews, and criticism. In keeping with the premise of the current volume-that engagement with Alcott has changed over timeand also in keeping with Alma J. Payne's invaluable Louisa May Alcott: A Reference Guide (1980), items in each category are for the most part arranged chronologically, then alphabetically. The overall arrangement is as follows:

Bibliographies of Secondary Sources Biographical Materials

Books Articles and Essays Biographical Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, and Other Reference Books

Reviews Reviews of Alcott's Books Reviews of Adaptations

Criticism Books Articles and Essays Dissertations

We have been most inclusive for the nineteenth-century materials, most of which have not previously been indexed for Alcott scholars. We have been more selective of items from the twentieth century, attempting to include scholarly materials that make substantial reference to Alcott, significant discussions in the popular press, and major book reviews. For leads to items that we have not included see Payne's 1980 Reference Guide, the bibliography in Gloria T. Delamar's 1990 Louisa

May Alcott and "Little Women," Norma Olin Ireland's 1970 Index to Women of the World and its 1988 supplement, and the notes to the introduction of the current volume.
