ABSTRACT
More attention has been given to whether students learn more in private than in public schools than to which students learn more or to the qualities of schooling in the private sector that distinguish it from schooling within the public sector. Aft er comparing theories of school choice, this chapter summarizes the diff erential impact of school choice on students from disparate social and ethnic backgrounds and then off ers a set of possible explanations for those diff erential impacts.
