ABSTRACT

With publication of an epidemiologic note in the June 4, 1981, issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the fi rst fi ve cases of what would become known as HIV/AIDS began. Now, 26 years later, HIV infects 21% of the Botswana population (UNAIDS, 2004) and more than 40 million people worldwide (UNAIDS & World Health Organization [WHO], 2005). More than 20 million people have died of AIDS. China is expected to have 10 million cases within 4 years (Ingham, 2004). In the United States, the issue of HIV/AIDS has become a part of everyday life even as the disease newly threatens gay male populations because of exploding rates of crystal methamphetamine use paired with instant Internet advertising for sex partners (Specter, 2005).
