ABSTRACT

Newspapers, including the Spanish-language press, contain and convey more political news and information than any other mass medium. This assertion holds true regardless of the actual or potential size of the audience of this medium, and whether or not the press contributes to any particular effects that could be assessed in conventional public opinion surveys. Word for word, on a regular basis and even more so during election periods, no other medium provides more coverage of politics than do newspapers. Assessing the campaign-oriented political content of the Spanish-language dailies reveals, if nothing else, the characteristics of the political materials upon which some members of the Latino community can build part of their knowledge and form their opinions about the political parties, their candidates, and issues.
