ABSTRACT
Teaching a language is never merely a technical, pedagogical issue, and the teaching of Arabic in the state of Israel is particularly charged. Zionism’s continuing ambivalence toward Arab existence in historic Palestine has shaped Arabic instruction in various, often contradictory, ways.
