ABSTRACT

In 1987, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons announced that 591,000 aesthetic, noncorrective plastic surgery operations had been performed in the previous year (Synnott, 1989); that number had risen to 6.9 million by 2002 (“Stats speak,” 2002). The Miss Universe beauty pageant has been an annual event since 1952 and regularly draws a worldwide television audience of more than 600 million (Banet-Weiser, 1999). The top five brands of hair coloring totaled more than $600 million in sales in 2002 (Bittar, 2003).
