ABSTRACT

Graduation day was near at Navajo High School.1 Young Navajo men wearing blue jeans, T-shirts, and Nikes stood in the hall talking to the vocational education teacher. “You learned lots of skills in my class. Try the job services office in town. They can help you find jobs,” he told them. One student disagreed. “I haven’t really seen any Navajo people working, like in convenience stores or grocery stores. So, the job outlook is pretty slim. Unless you figure out something else to do. Like shoveling snow or something. But the outlook isn’t really great. For Indians, you know.”
