ABSTRACT

In 1985, the Threshold Foundation switched coasts and affiliated itself with an innovative and increasingly influential activist enterprise in San Francisco, the Tides Foundation.

Established in 1976, theTides Foundationwas the brainchild of Drummond Pike, who at the time was working as executive director of the Shalan Foundation. The concept of the foundation was similar to that which lay behind the Threshold Foundation-pooling the resources of progressive donors and channeling them toward projects not typically supported by traditional philanthropy-but his sense of scale was far more grandiose and his vision more comprehensive. For Pike realized that for the pooling of resources to work most effectively, someone would need to provide a variety of core management services, not only for the donors, but for the recipients as well.
