ABSTRACT
Elizabeth Bates (Liz, to us all) was a very dear friend and colleague, so I am sure that she would have forgiven me if I start the chapter that I have written in her honor with five quotations that would have given her goose pimples and raised her blood pressure momentarily! My purpose of course is rhetorical, and I will use Bates’s Emergentist Theory to challenge the common theoretical thread that underlies each of these statements.
