ABSTRACT
Class action lawsuits are widely used to adjudicate similar claims made by a defined group of plaintiffs against a common defendant or group of defendants. As a procedural mechanism, the class action device allows litigation of such claims in a single court proceeding. The device was developed to facilitate judicial economy and efficiency in handling groups of similar claims as opposed to requiring a separate lawsuit for each individual claim.
