ABSTRACT
Nemcová was a leading figure in late Czech romanticism and the first eminent Czech woman writer. She is still considered to be one of the most significant Czech prose writers, and her novel Babicka (1855; Grandmother) is a classic of Czech literature and one of the most frequently translated works in Czech.
