of both books depict the dehumanized, noisy, dirty, ugly, and graffiti-ridden world that is modern urban Britain. The environment in which characters live is largely shaped from without. The individual may be, like Anthony Keating in The Ice Age, no more than a "weed upon the tide of history" doomed to enact a drama that differs only in particulars from other members of his or her generation.
