ABSTRACT

Hysteria is one of the oldest and most significant psychiatric conditions. Clear descriptions of hysteria have been found in both ancient Greek and Egyptian medical texts (Veith, 1977). Hysteria was the principal psychiatric condition that confronted Freud as he struggled to understand (and treat) mental illnesses. It was his clinical experiences with hysteria that provided the starting point for the development of psychoanalysis (Breuer & Freud, 1895/1957). Given its long history and prominence in psychiatric medicine, it is not surprising that the Rorschach Inkblot Method should also be associated with hysteria.
