ABSTRACT

A proficiency-based admissions system determines college readiness by using a set of academic content standards and criteria as a framework for analyzing data from criterion-referenced tests and classroom-based assessments of student work. This approach has the potential to capture more directly student mastery of academic content knowledge and cognitive skills. Students and teachers can identify weaknesses more clearly and direct their time and energy to tasks that prepare students for college success. The potential advantage of this method is that student readiness for postsecondary education can be ascertained with greater accuracy, provided the assessments are based on the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in entry-level college classes. The result is better data for admissions officers and better preparation for college-bound students, leading to better performance in college.
