ABSTRACT

Advertising in one form or another is centuries old. What we think of today as the advertising industry became formalized in the late 19th century with the formation of advertising agencies. In the early days, the fledgling agencies literally contracted for newspaper and magazine pages, which they then sold at a profit to businesses that wanted to reach a particular audience. These early arrangements evolved into full-service agencies that handled all areas of client advertising from research to creative execution to placement of the finished advertising in the appropriate media.
