ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describe innovative uses of distance education at Purdue University’s Center for Twenty-first Century Conceptual Tools (TCCT). At TCCT, the central goal is to investigate the nature of the most important understandings and abilities-in mathematics, science, language and literacy-that are most significant to provide foundations for success beyond school in a technology-based age of information (Lesh, Zawojewski, & Carmona, 2003). In other words, TCCT is investigating ways that the 3 R s (Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic) need to be reconceptualized to meet the demands of the new millennium.
