ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we propose a revised interpretation of the traditional formulation of the states of the glottis and of their relation to each other. We begin with a description of our methodological approach

to the investigation of sound quality in the larynx, laryngeal vestibule, and pharynx, then a brief review of early descriptions of states of the glottis, followed by a categorical explanation of our proposed states of the glottis supported by evidence drawn from laryngoscopic observations together with illustrations of cardinal states abstracted from linguistic occurrences in our laryngoscopic research project database.
