ABSTRACT

How do we know that what we do in consultation is good practice and beneficial for clients, consultees, and consultee organizations. To approach an answer to this question, this chapter reviews research and evaluation methodology, and discusses problems inherent in consultation research and evaluation design. One goal is to achieve congruence between consultation theory and evaluation methodology that requires a consideration of different types of research and evaluation strategies within the main methodological paradigms. A wide variety of evaluation methods and perspectives may be required if we want to understand, explain, and develop successful consultation approaches that can guide practice and advance the art of consultation.
