ABSTRACT

The World Wide Web is now an established medium for language learning and instruction. Individuals can use a variety of e-learning sites to study foreign languages. Felix (2001, p. 4) listed no fewer than 18 types of language study sites, including courses, grammar-based materials, tools, chat sites, and interactive tasks. Teachers, too, are making much use of the Internet for teaching languages; at least seven books have appeared recently on this topic: Dudeney (2000), Felix (2001), Feyten et al. (2002), Li (2000), Teeler and Gray (2000), Warschauer, Shertzer, and Meloni (2000), and Windeatt, Hardisty, and Eastment (2000). Besides keypal exchanges, MOOing, and home-page creation, teachers assign textbooks such as Gitsaki and Taylor (2000) or Sperling (1999), which bring Internet resources into the classroom for language practice, or have learners exploit Internet sources for reading practice and writing papers.
