ABSTRACT

Large-scale transformations of the Swedish society have taken place during the past decades, some of them initiated by the state. Behind and within these changes we may find certain parameters. An analysis along these parameters may not only help us understand the societal and educational changes that have occurred but also forecast the probable educational changes within the near future. Recent educational changes in Sweden may be termed “restructuring.” Papagiannis, Owens, and Easton (1992) take this concept to mean decentralization, introduction of choice, and/or privatization. The background to the restructuring and probable future changes in primary and lower secondary education in Sweden will be described and interpreted with the help of a conceptual framework. Three schools will be used as examples. 1
