ABSTRACT
That children do indeed influence family dynamics is no longer in doubt, if it ever was. The papers by my colleagues in this symposium amply attest to the importance of child effects. Now I wish to introduce some complications arising from the fact that children are either male or female. This aspect of a child’s current persona must surely affect many things about the role of a child in the family and the kind of interaction that occurs between the child and other family members.
