ABSTRACT

In this chapter we ask whether self-determined learning theory is sufficiently credible and valuable to consider adopting. To find out if the theory is credible, we ask whether its explanation makes sense and is supported by evidence. To find out if the theory is valuable, we ask whether the explanation covers enough of the factors affecting engagement and learning to be worth using. These standards of credibility and value apply to all theories considered for adoption and use (Mithaug, 2000).
