ABSTRACT

The chapters in this volume reflect recent theory and research on the nature and role of personal epistemology. The authors have outlined the current status of their own thinking and discussed some of the results from their own research programs on epistemological beliefs and thinking. As in any field, there are diverse views about the nature of personal epistemologies and what role they may play in learning and development. Nevertheless, if the field is to advance, it seems important to try to develop consensus about some of the theoretical, conceptual, and methodological challenges in research on personal epistemology. In addition, it is useful for both experienced researchers as well as novices in this area to have a map of future avenues for research on personal epistemology.
