ABSTRACT
In this chapter we have two purposes. One is to state what we think ethnography is and what ethnographers study. The other is to describe how we try to teach it. By trying to teach ethnographic methods and the concepts and values that lie behind them, as well as doing ethnography, we come to an understanding of how ethnography is a certain kind of inquiry, guided by assumptions and purposes that are different than most methods in the social sciences and education.
