ABSTRACT
A prevalent theme across each of the models if presented in this volume is the importance of land; a place where Native communities can practice their cultural traditions, raise their children and youth to cherish a rich heritage, and realize a culturally appropriate future. In this chapter, Kalena adds his voice to this message. His model reminds both Native leaders and community members that only through strong community advocacy can social injustices be addressed. He writes that the individual must fi rst embrace the Hawaiian language and culture. When a like-minded group of knowledgeable individuals are drawn together, that group forms a bond born out of respect for their land, lineage, language, and culture. It is this bond that links them to their ancestors as well as to future generations.
