ABSTRACT

A signifi cant goal of the Go to the Source model, the integral link between very diverse groups, is a call to action to reclaim Native languages and Native rights to determine the shape and content of Native education. To summarize, Native language-based educational initiatives took shape during the 1970s in New Zealand among the Maori iwi (tribes). The movement began with the Kohanga Reo (1982). This “language nest” program, developed for the early childhood setting (ages 6 months to 6 years), was a total Native language and culture immersion program that brought the entire family and community into the learning process.
