ABSTRACT

There are two ways to study the evolution of intelligence. One can start with the fact of human uniqueness. Humans occupy, as John Tooby and Irven DeVore (1987) put it, the “cognitive niche.” We deal with our environment, both physical and social, in a radically different way than other animals; we possess mental powers that have given rise to science, technology, art, government, and culture. These powers are either absent in other creatures, or exist only in considerably diminished forms.
