ABSTRACT

THE Zones and Strata concept may well be applied to the study of the earliest settlements in such a country as Britain. The archaeologist studies innumerable excavations, and, as time goes on, obtains a fairly clear picture of how a technique-such as for instance the development of settlements-has evolved in a given environment. But a very useful parallel investigation consists in studying the 'zones of distribution'

about such a centre of evolution as Western Europe. This may be made clear by the following simple diagram.
