ABSTRACT
What type of mathematics learning should preschool and kindergarten children engage in? What topics, if any, should young children be taught beyond simple counting and recognition of basic shapes like circles and squares? The basic issue is whether organized mathematics learning should be considered a key goal for early childhood education-a vital part of the preschool and kindergarten curriculum.
