ABSTRACT

The previous two chapters have focused on the residential areas of towns and cities, with but a few passing references to all other land uses. This concentration can be justified because residential areas generally occupy the largest portion of an urban area and their homes are the centres of the residents’ lives. Nevertheless, few towns are predominantly residential in character and it is the non-residential areas, especially those containing the industrial and commercial functions, which are both raison d'être and focus of urban life.
