ABSTRACT

No matter how innovative the program design, how dedicated the faculty, or how motivated the students, a content-based English as a Second Language (ESL) program will not succeed unless administrative issues are dealt with effectively on a day-to-day basis. Lines of communication among everyone involved in the program-college administrators, program directors, participating faculty members, support staff such as tutors and counselors, and students-must be kept open at all times. We hope that readers keep in mind the overriding importance of communication while considering the four major areas discussed in this chapter: program design and planning, recruitment of students, curriculum development and pedagogy, and program evaluation and fine tuning.
