ABSTRACT

In a recent symposium on short-term memory Richard Shiffrin had the task of providing a commentary upon the papers in the symposium. He made two comments in that summary that set the scene for the research that we describe in the following chapter.

“There is presently a rather nonspecific modal view of short-term memory. This view contains three components: temporary activation, control processes and capacity limitations.” (Shiffrin, 1993, p. 195).

“In comparison with models of long-term retrieval, however,… models for short-term memory are still at an early stage of development” (Shiffrin, 1993, p. 196).
