ABSTRACT

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed. [DSM-IV]; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) defines anxiety as the “apprehensive anticipation of future danger or misfortune accompanied by a feeling of dysphoria or somatic symptoms of tension” (p. 764). Unfortunately, this definition encompasses multiple experiential and biological states ranging from nonspecific agitative states to panic. The most common usage of the term refers to preparative or anticipatory anxiety characterized by worries and dysphoric autonomic arousal.
