ABSTRACT

In addition to the severity of the objective and subjective stressors, moderators and mediators need to be considered in order to better understand the process that leads to strain reactions or negative outcomes among employees (Edwards, 1988; Kahn & Byosiere, 1991). Many articles in the stress literature include moderators as part of the study hypotheses to explain differences in strain levels among groups or use them as a post hoc explanation for unexpected ndings. Mediators are related to both the independent and dependent variables and serve as a link through which the action of the former on the latter must pass (Frese & Zapf, 1988). Recently, two somewhat related concepts, time urgency and time management, have been suggested as important intervening variables in the stress process. The

present article describes the role these intervening variables play in changing the relationship between independent and dependent variables.
