ABSTRACT
Higher education continues to be under the gun. Decreasing federal and state revenues and resources; increasing tuition costs; loss of access to schools by diverse class and racial groups; deferred building maintenance; increasing equipment and salary costs; faculty morale; lost public trust; disconnects between what is taught and what is learned; lack of clear focus and mission; and limited links between universities, their communities, business, and K-12 education are examples of the challenges facing administrators in higher education today. Administrators are being held accountable for decisions involving personnel, resources, funding, legal and political challenges, and student learning while trying to fulfi ll the mission of their units, colleges, and universi-ties. The challenges are daunting.
