ABSTRACT

If the life conditions of adolescents in different countries and different cultures are to be understood, it is important to study what adolescents actually do in everyday life, how much time they spend on what types of activities, and at what time during the day they typically perform them. In addition, getting information about the way people organize their everyday life provides essential information about individual and societal priorities and values (Alsaker & Flammer, in press). This does not mean that reported activities only reflect deliberate choices. Some are deliberate choices, but some are dictated by society (e.g., how much time children and adolescents spend in school). Furthermore, society’s influence on adolescents’ time use may also be indirect through the allocation of certain duties to certain roles, especially to gender roles.
