ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the role of metalinguistic awareness in learning to read Chinese. Metalinguistic awareness is the ability to identify and reflect on the structural features of language. Our working hypothesis is that learning to read is “fundamentally metalinguistic” (Nagy & Anderson, 1998). Learning to read requires becoming aware of the basic units of spoken language, the basic units of the writing system, and the mapping between the two.
